Return on Solution:
Creating a Center of Innovation in Services and Products

The Health Care Cluster in this region experienced modest growth of 0.7 percent during the period 1989 to 1995 and is forecasted to experience growth similar to the national average between 1995 to 2005- an estimated 2.6 percent. However, if the health care cluster is to become a source of added-value to the economy, this growth will have to come from greater export of current and new innovative health care activities. This could be achieved by expanding existing service to non-local customers, which would involve developing specializations beyond existing services that attract new clients to the hospitals and their facilities. This growth could also arise from the hospitals diversifying their health care businesses into new areas of innovation in health care-related businesses based on collaborative research and development with other partners in this region. If the cluster is able to respond to the challenges of expanding service consumption by exporting services, adding new specializations, or forming entirely new medical businesses, this cluster could become more competitive.
