Chapter VIII D UTILITIES

D. STORMWATER FACILITIES

In the City of Kalamazoo, sanitary and storm sewers are divided into two different systems. The sanitary sewers collect wastewater and are used to transport waste to a treatment facility. Storm sewers collect rainwater runoff to outlets and retain storm water to minimize flooding. The main natural features that carry surface runoff, in the Kalamazoo area, includes the Kalamazoo River, Arcadia Creek, Axtell Creek, Portage Creek, Davis Creek, and Spring Valley Creek. Because much of the area's tributaries to these streams are outside of the City, coordination with adjacent local units of governments is needed. Relief sewers and on-site storage of runoff in new construction areas can help ease the run-off problems that come with new areas of urbanization.
